MOVE WITHOUT LIMITS

Tailored, Multi-Disciplinary Treatment for Hip Impingement and Groin Pain

The groin and hip area is supported by a complex network of muscles, tendons, and ligaments that stabilise the pelvis and facilitate core movements like walking, running, pivoting, and kicking. Groin and hip injuries—including muscle strains, tendon inflammation, labral tears, hip impingements, and chronic tendinopathy—are common, often caused by sudden directional changes, overuse in sports, or acute trauma.

Our tailored groin and hip injury treatment plans can include:

  • Clinical and physical assessments of your movement to identify causative factors
  • Soft tissue therapy to relieve any muscular tension, stress or stiffness
  • Articulation to reduce pain and stiffness whilst improving your mobility
  • Dry needling for pain relief and to minimise muscular tension through the elimination of trigger points
  • Specific  advice surrounding potential causative and maintaining factors
  • Prescription of strengthening, stretching and mobility exercises to improve strength and movement whilst preventing recurrences
  • Collaboration with our multidisciplinary healthcare team to evaluate and improve all aspects of your health and wellbeing

Common symptoms of hip impingement and hip injuries

Hip pain can present as:

  • Pain that worsens with activity (running, squatting, pivoting) or prolonged sitting/standing
  • Stiffness and reduced range of motion in the hip joint
  • Swelling, tenderness, or warmth around the hip
  • Weakness or instability when walking, changing direction, or climbing stairs
  • Limping or altered gait due to pain
  • Deep, aching discomfort in the hip, groin, buttock, or outer thigh
  • Sharp or pinching pain in the front of the hip or groin
  • Clicking, locking, or catching sensations inside the hip
  • Night pain or discomfort when lying on the affected side

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint supported by strong muscles, tendons, and cartilage that provide stability and allow smooth, powerful movement. Because we rely on our hips for everyday activities—walking, bending, running, and twisting—hip injuries and impingements are common. These issues can vary in type and severity, but most fall into a few main categories:

1. Muscle strains – groin (adductors), hip flexors, or hamstrings

2. Tendinopathy – overuse of hip or groin tendons

3. Labral tears – damage to cartilage around the hip socket

4. Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) – abnormal bone contact in the joint

5. Bursitis – trochanteric or iliopsoas bursa inflammation

6. Stress or avulsion fractures – often from repetitive impact or sudden force

7. Osteitis pubis – inflammation at the pubic symphysis

8. Hip dislocation/subluxation – partial or full displacement of the joint

9. Osteoarthritis – wear and tear of hip cartilage

10. Snapping hip syndrome – tendon snapping over the joint

Most hip conditions respond well to conservative care, with physiotherapy at the core of treatment. The main goals are to reduce pain, restore mobility, strengthen supporting muscles, and guide a safe return to activity.

Treatment generally involves a tailored range of care, which can include a combination of:

Non-surgical treatment:

  • Manual therapy – such as massage, dry needling and osteopathy to ease stiffness, improve joint mobility, and reduce pain
  • Ergonomic advice – guidance on posture, sitting habits, and sports-specific technique for optimal hip health
  • Modified exercise – a tailored care plan with exercises designed to help alleviate pain and pressure on the hip
  • Strength & conditioning – strengthening glutes, core, and stabilising muscles to improving flexibility and control

Medical treatment:

  • Anti-inflammatory measures (ice, medication, or injections)
  • Surgery (arthroscopy or joint replacement) if conservative management fails

Should surgery be required, we offer pre- and post-operative hip physio to ensure smooth recovery and prevent recurrence.
