MOVE WITHOUT LIMITS

Tailored, Multi-Disciplinary Treatment for Acute Hamstring Injuries and Chronic Pain

The hamstrings are essential for stabilising the pelvis and generating force for major lower-body movements like running, sprinting, jumping, and knee flexion. Hamstring injuries—spanning minor strains and tendon irritation through to partial tears and persistent tendinopathy—are common, especially in activities that demand rapid acceleration, abrupt deceleration, or excessive stretching.

Our tailored hamstring injury treatment plans can include:

  • Clinical and physical assessments of your movement to identify causative factors
  • Soft tissue therapy to relieve any muscular tension, stress or stiffness
  • Articulation to reduce pain and stiffness whilst improving your mobility
  • Dry needling for pain relief and to minimise muscular tension through the elimination of trigger points
  • Specific advice surrounding potential causative and maintaining factors
  • Prescription of strengthening, stretching and mobility exercises to improve strength and movement whilst preventing recurrences
  • Collaboration with our multidisciplinary healthcare team to evaluate and improve all aspects of your health and wellbeing

Common symptoms of a hamstring injury

Hamstring injuries can present with a range of symptoms, including:

  • Sudden, sharp pain in the back of the thigh during activity (especially sprinting or jumping)
  • A popping or snapping sensation at the time of injury
  • Swelling, bruising, or tenderness along the hamstring muscle
  • Pain that worsens with stretching or contracting the muscle
  • Stiffness and reduced flexibility in the back of the thigh
  • Weakness when bending the knee or extending the hip
  • Difficulty walking, running, or climbing stairs
  • A visible or palpable lump in the muscle (in more severe strains or tears)
  • Ongoing tightness or discomfort in the hamstring, particularly after sitting or physical activity

Hamstring injuries are some of the most frequently encountered muscle injuries in both athletes and active people. While they can differ in type and severity, most can be grouped into a few core categories:

  1. Muscle strain or tear – partial or complete tearing of the hamstring muscle fibres, often from sudden acceleration or overstretching
  2. Tendinopathy – overuse or degeneration of the hamstring tendons, commonly near their attachment at the sit bone (ischial tuberosity)
  3. Avulsion injury – when the tendon pulls away from the bone, sometimes taking a small bone fragment with it
  4. Contusion (bruise) – caused by a direct blow to the back of the thigh, leading to bleeding within the muscle
  5. Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) – stiffness and discomfort following intense or unfamiliar exercise
  6. Chronic hamstring tightness – persistent tension or discomfort due to incomplete healing or muscle imbalance
  7. Recurrent strain – reinjury from returning to activity too soon or not addressing underlying weakness or flexibility issues

Most hamstring injuries heal effectively with conservative care, and physiotherapy is central to that process. Treatment focuses on easing pain and swelling, restoring mobility, rebuilding strength, and guiding a progressive, safe return to activity.

Effective recovery from hamstring injuries typically involves a combination of:

Non-surgical treatment:

  • Manual therapy – including massage, dry needling, or soft tissue release to reduce muscle tension, promote healing, and improve mobility
  • Activity modification – guidance on resting from aggravating movements while maintaining safe levels of activity
  • Targeted exercise therapy – progressive stretching and strengthening exercises to restore hamstring flexibility, endurance, and control
  • Strength & conditioning – reconditioning the hamstrings, glutes, and core to improve stability and prevent future injury

Medical treatment:

  • Anti-inflammatory measures – such as ice, compression, or prescribed medication to manage pain and swelling
  • Imaging and specialist referral – in cases of significant tears or suspected avulsion injuries, further assessment may be required

Should surgery be necessary for a complete rupture or avulsion, we provide pre- and post-operative hamstring physio to improve hamstring recovery reduce the risk of re-injury.
