MOVE WITHOUT LIMITS

Tailored, Multi-Disciplinary Treatment for ACL Injuries

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is essential for knee stability, particularly during activities involving pivoting, jumping, and sudden changes in direction. ACL injuries most commonly occur in sports such as football, basketball, soccer, skiing, and netball, but they can also result from slips, falls, or workplace accidents.

Our comprehensive ACL injury treatment plans focus on restoring optimal knee function and minimising the risk of re-injury. Based on your individual condition, your tailored program may include:

  • Clinical and physical assessments to determine the extent of the ACL tear and any related instability
  • Manual therapy and soft tissue techniques to reduce stiffness and promote healing
  • Swelling and inflammation management through ice therapy, compression, and gentle mobilisation
  • Neuromuscular retraining to restore balance and coordination
  • Progressive strengthening of surrounding muscles, particularly the quadriceps and hamstrings, to support knee stability
  • Custom exercise programs for mobility, strength, and agility
  • Education and guidance on return-to-sport timelines and injury prevention strategies
  • Collaboration with our multidisciplinary healthcare team,  including physiotherapistsexercise physiologists, and osteopaths

Common Symptoms of an ACL Injury

An ACL tear or sprain can cause:

  • A popping sound or sensation at the time of injury
  • Immediate swelling or pain in the knee joint
  • Instability or the feeling that your knee may “give way”
  • Reduced range of motion and difficulty walking or bearing weight
  • Tenderness along the joint line
  • Difficulty bending or straightening the knee fully
  • Ongoing weakness or loss of confidence during movement

At Ace Sports Clinic Toronto, we treat all degrees and variations of ACL injuries, including:

  • Partial ACL tears, where some ligament fibres are damaged but not completely ruptured
  • Complete ACL ruptures, where the ligament is fully torn and the knee becomes significantly unstable
  • Post-surgical ACL rehabilitation with structured physiotherapy after ACL reconstruction or repair
  • Chronic ACL instability with recurring knee giving-way episodes due to incomplete recovery or previous injury
  • Associated injuries, such as meniscal tears or collateral ligament damage that often occur with ACL trauma

Your ACL physiotherapy treatment plan will depend on the severity of your injury, your activity goals, and whether surgery is required. Common stages include:

  • Acute Phase: Reducing pain and swelling, restoring basic range of motion, and beginning gentle muscle activation.
  • Rehabilitation Phase: Progressive strengthening, balance and coordination exercises, and gait retraining to restore knee stability.
  • Functional Phase: Return-to-sport conditioning, including agility drills, plyometrics, and sport-specific movement retraining.
  • Prevention Phase: Ongoing maintenance and strengthening to reduce re-injury risk through guided exercise programs.
