Naturopathic & Functional Medicine

Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a system of primary health care that integrates current, evidence-based science and traditional philosophy into a holistic approach of treatment using natural therapies.

Our Naturopathic Doctors utilize specialized lab tests to identify the underlying causes to disease to treat patients individually, recognizing that health is not merely the absence of disease, but thriving in all areas of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Naturopathic medicine emphasizes education and prevention using natural therapies to stimulate the body’s ability to heal, to improve energy, balance hormones and regain vitality to achieve peak performance.

Treatments may include clinical nutrition, lifestyle counseling, botanical/herbal medicine and nutraceuticals. Naturopathic doctors monitor for interactions between herbs, drugs, and nutrients and make sure that the treatments given have been established as safe practices.

Areas our Naturopathic Doctors are able to help you with include:

  • Women’s health – menopause, menstrual cycle issues, acne, PCOS, PMS, thyroid conditions, urinary tract infections
  • Gut health – food allergies, heartburn, gas and bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mental and brain health – anxiety, depression, cognition headaches, insomnia, poor sleep
  • Chronic pain conditions – muscle and joint pain, arthritis, low back pain, recurrent injuries, nerve pain
  • Energy and metabolism – low energy and fatigue, metabolic disorder, diabetes, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome
  • General health and prevention

All licensed Naturopathic Doctors complete a minimum of three years of university-level training, including pre-medical courses, followed by four years at an accredited naturopathic medical college. They also complete more than 1,000 clinical hours and 5,800 hours of specialized training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, immunology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and general medical diagnosis in addition to naturopathic principles that include medical herbalism, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, massage, skeletal adjustments and acupuncture (Traditional Chinese Medicine).

Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is a personalized, systems-oriented model of care that our Naturopathic Doctors use to approach health. The goal of Functional Medicine is to address the underlying causes of disease to promote health and vitality in each patient.

Functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease.

The Functional medicine model enables our health professionals to practice proactive, predictive, and personalized medicine that empowers patients to take an active role in their own health. Patients who are active participants in their therapeutic plan feel more in control of their own well-being and are more likely to make sustained lifestyle changes to improve their health.

Functional Medicine

  • Health oriented
  • Patient-centred
  • Biochemical individuality
  • Holistic
  • Looks at underlying causes of disease
  • Preventative approach
  • Access to advanced testing

Functional medicine recognizes that to obtain optimal health, it begins by addressing foundational lifestyle factors including sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress levels, relationships, and genetics. Practitioners assess how the interaction of these elements with predisposing factors and ongoing physiological processes, result in fundamental imbalances leading to signs and symptoms. Together, you and your practitioner will curate a personalized and targeted treatment plan to address these aspects of health and reverse the disease progression.
