Tailored, Multi-Disciplinary Treatment for Shin Splints
Shin splints, clinically known as medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), occur when the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue around the shin become overloaded. They commonly develop after sudden increases in training, running on hard surfaces, wearing poor footwear, or from biomechanical factors such as flat feet and tight calf muscles.
Our physiotherapy for shin splints is designed to reduce pain and support long-term recovery. Your personalized plan may include:
- A comprehensive assessment to identify the severity of shin splints and guide treatment
- Hands-on therapy to reduce calf tightness and relieve pain
- Load management strategies to support recovery without overloading the body
- Pain and swelling management through ice, mobilisation, and activity modification
- Neuromuscular retraining to improve foot and ankle stability
- Progressive strengthening for the calves, feet, hips, and supporting muscles
- Targeted rehab exercises, including mobility work and graded return-to-running programs
- Advice on footwear, training surfaces, and progression to help prevent recurrence
- Collaborative care from our physiotherapists, osteopaths, and your medical team

Speed Up Recovery and Get Precise Pain Relief for Shin Splints
Shin splints are one of the most common lower-leg overuse injuries, often affecting runners, athletes, dancers, and active individuals increasing training too quickly. With the right treatment, most people recover well and return to full performance.
Common Symptoms of Shin Splints
Shin splints can cause:
- Pain along the inner or front edge of the shin
- Tenderness when touching the affected area
- Stiffness or aching at the start or end of exercise
- Symptoms that initially improve with warm-up but return with ongoing activity
- Mild swelling around the lower leg
- Discomfort when running, jumping, or walking uphill
Types of Shin Splints We Treat
At Ace Sports Clinic Toronto, we treat all types of shin splints, including:
- Medial tibial stress syndrome caused by overload of the tibial periosteum
- Shin pain associated with improper biomechanics, such as over-pronation
- Shin splints that are linked to rapid increases in running distance or intensity
- Recurrent shin pain due to inadequate rehab or premature return to sport
- Differential diagnosis support for conditions that mimic shin splints
Treatment Protocol for Shin Splints
Your shin splint physiotherapy plan will depend on symptom severity, activity goals, and contributing biomechanical factors. Treatment commonly follows these stages:
- Acute Phase: Reducing pain and irritation, modifying activity, restoring gentle mobility, and beginning basic calf activation.
- Rehabilitation Phase: Progressive strengthening, foot and ankle stability exercises, gait retraining, and graded loading to build tissue tolerance.
- Functional Phase: Sport-specific conditioning, return-to-running programs, impact training, and agility work as appropriate.
- Prevention Phase: Long-term strengthening, running technique refinement, and load-management strategies to maintain resilience and reduce re-injury risk.
